Managing Lost Person Search Class 2023

AMRG is hosting a NASAR Managing the Lost Person Incident (MLPI) class in March and April, 2023.  This class will include the latest developments in search management theory and virtual search planning. We will cover how to utilize lost person behavior, terrain driven search theory, and scenario driven search theory to improve search strategy and to create more effective search plans and search segment assignments. It will involve significant hands-on activities utilizing SARTopo and online ICS forms for both remote and in-person planning of searches and for real-time tracking and communication during search operations.
 
This is a hybrid class that includes self-paced online learning, instructor led Zoom sessions, and in-person classes and a mock search.  Remote session Zoom will be held in the evenings of March 21 & 30, April 4 & 11. The in-person session will be held on April 21-22 in conjunction with the Pennsylvania SAR Summit at Camp Bucoco, Butler County.  There will be self-paced "homework" activities that you complete on your own between the Zoom sessions. The class includes a number of mapping exercises which will be done with SARTopo. Other forms and documents will be accessed online via Google Docs. In order to participate, you will need to have a computer and internet access. 
 
The MLPI course is designed to teach the essential knowledge and skills necessary to perform as the initial response Search Manager on a lost person incident. The course prepares the student for the management responsibilities and leadership skills required during SAR missions. The course explains the tasks and procedures needed to effectively manage SAR operations from the initial response through the expansion phases of the search to the final demobilization of all resources. The MLPI course explains and describes in detail the overall objectives, strategies, and tactics needed for a successful outcome of SAR missions. This class will put a particular focus on effective search planning and managing large, multi-agency incidents.
 
Who should attend: The course is designed members who have been crew members and/or crew leaders during search and rescue operations and are ready to advance to the management level and/or want to be able to perform on an incident management staff, Managers of emergency response organizations who have designated responsibilities from their organizations to function as the "on-scene manager" during a lost person incident, SAR Incident Commanders and key staff personnel who would like to refresh or expand their knowledge of search and rescue management practices, and SAR personnel who want to learn comprehensive and detailed information about the complexities of the lost person incident.
 
This class is approved for 40 hours of PA EMS Con-ed, other. 
 
It is recommended that MLPI students have previoud experience responding to missing person searches and have taken Fundamentals of Search and Rescue and/or Advanced Search and Rescue courses, Introduction to Incident Command (NIMS) IS-100, and the (NIMS) IS-200 series courses.    
 
Cost: The cost of the class is $200.  Included in the cost of the class is attending the full Pennsylvania SAR Summit,on April 20-21, camping at Camp Bucoco, and all meals on April 20-21.
